Kathrin Scheel Ungerleider, 51
Breast Cancer
My recovery from breast cancer, diagnosed in 1998 one year
after my husband's death from cancer, was difficult. The tumor
had been found early and was treated conventionally with surgical
excision and radiation.
Although my prognosis was good, my health spiraled downward.
Major problems occurred each year, ranging from extreme fatigue,
impaired equilibrium, unnecessary surgery on the other breast
for a suspected tumor, to months of severe panic and depression.
Finally, I followed a trusted friend's advice and went to
the Paracelsus Klinik in August of 2001, as a patient of Dr.
Rau.
Since then my health and state of mind have begun to stabilize
and take a decisive turn for the better. Although being a
patient with a life-threatening illness is never easy, I immediately
felt that here was an integrated, holistic response to my
symptoms, which before had been viewed as unrelated.
I encountered a non-alarmist, nurturing atmosphere, where
suffering and uncertainty were "held" very differently
from the way I had experienced previously. In addition the
many avenues of inquiry into the psychic and spiritual underpinnings
of my condition offered at the clinic, awakened my interest
and soon trust in my own life's strange path. And as I started
to feel better I recognized the opportunity offered by this
illness and found support for deep change. Slowly during many
subsequent visits I began to gain knowledge of and confidence
in biological medicine which I had been unfamiliar with.
Here was an alternative to the, with exceptions of course,
crazed, fragmented and dogmatic response to complex health-problems
that conventional medicine offers nowadays. Finding it completely
worthwhile to put my trust in this paradigm I am, by doing
so, furthering an excellent alternative approach to healing
and health maintenance.
I believe that we as patients need biological medicine while
also having the privilege and duty to strengthen its base
by learning more about it and spreading the word.
When allopathic medicine, generally portrayed as unquestionable,
offers insufficient help, the patient is challenged not to
accept that. For me, rising to this challenge means learning
to trust myself and taking responsibility for my healthcare
decisions. Biological medicine as practiced at Lustmuehle
is an integral part of my return to physical and emotional
health.
