Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the Paracelsus Clinic

How do I start the process of applying to the clinic?

The first step in this process is to fill out a patient questionnaire and fax it to our office at (508) 748-1976. You can download this form from our website at www.pbmn.org under Patient Forms. You can also call our office at (508) 748-0816 and we will send this form to you via fax, email or mail. All North American patients are processed through our office. Once your questionnaire is received, it is submitted to the clinic for review by Dr. Rau. You may request a phone consultation or first available appointments, to discuss your case in more detail, please contact the PBMN office directly. Once Dr. Rau has reviewed your questionnaire, he may recommend that you spend a portion of time at the Paracelsus Clinic and some time at the Paracelsus Clinic Al Ronc. All new patients must be evaluated at the Paracelsus Dental Clinic, no exceptions. Please visit http://www.paracelsus.ch/en/dentistry/dentistry-and-biological-medicine/?

Dr. Rau also offers special intensive weeks in Al Ronc which are posted on our website at http://www.pbmn.org/inner/clinics_alronc.html. For more information about the Paracelsus Clinic, please visit www.paracelsus.ch and the Al Ronc Clinic at www.alronc.ch.

How long should I expect to stay?

The typical first stay is for two to three weeks. This allows the doctors’ time to do a complete and thorough evaluation, make dietary changes, and begin appropriate treatments for you. Follow-up visits are for shorter durations.

Do I stay over at the clinic?

The clinic offers out-patient services, so you will stay in a hotel during your visit. The Santis Hotel prepares meals according to Dr. Rau’s guidelines and provides their own shuttle service to and from the clinic for patients who need it. There is also the possibility to do infrared sauna, pulsed magnetic field or even local hyperthermia as additional treatment in the evenings. Patients not staying at the Santis Hotel are welcome to make dinner reservations at the Santis to take advantage of Dr. Rau’s diet meal plan.

How much does it usually cost?

Initial costs at the Medical Clinic are approximately $3,500 to $6,500 per week which includes any medications you may need. This estimate depends on your illness and your treatment plan. Dental visits are an additional fee and estimates will be provided after a patient is evaluated by the dental clinic. Most of the hotels include breakfast; however lunch and dinners are an extra cost. Flights and accommodations are also an additional cost.

How and when do I pay?

You will be required to pay a deposit of 500 Swiss Francs to secure your appointments at the time of confirmation. Upon arrival, the clinic will ask for a 4,000 Swiss Francs deposit which will be applied to your first week’s bill. This amount may be adjusted if you only stay for one week, however most stays are two to three weeks. Every Thursday morning you will receive a status report on your treatment cost and you will be asked to make another down payment as soon as your credit is used up. Most people pay by credit card, however, Travelers’ checks are also accepted. Please refer to the Payment Form that you are asked to fill out for more details. The conversion to Swiss Francs will be done by your credit card company. There are banks and ATMs in Teufen. Remember Swiss Francs, not Euros. Check the rate of exchange before you go. There are many places online to get the latest currency exchange rates. For example: http://www.xe.com/ucc.

Does health insurance cover any of the consultations or treatments?

It depends on the state you live in and your insurance plan. A few states and some health plans are expanding coverage to include some types of alternative health care. The clinic does not work directly with US health insurance providers, however, if you do have coverage, you would pay out of pocket for the expenses and then submit your expenses and receipts to your insurance company for reimbursement. We advise you to contact your insurance company prior to your visits to see what might be covered.

Is there a comparable clinic in the United States?

The Paracelsus Clinic is unique, in that all of the services are in one facility, including specialty diagnostic equipment, dental services, treatment capabilities, and a pharmacy. There are some individual doctors in North America practicing some aspects of Paracelsus Biological Medicine, but none are able, at this time, to provide a complete array of services and comprehensive work-ups. Please contact our office for names of practitioners in your area for post treatments after your stay at Paracelsus. To see some of our US Practitioners please visit http://www.pbmn.org/inner/clinics_uspract.html.

How long is the wait to get an appointment?

It varies, depending on the season, the doctors’ schedules, and which doctors you need to see. In general, you can expect to wait about 2-4
months to arrange for your first stay. It can take up to 14 working days to get an appointment date or phone consultation. For urgent situations (e.g. newly found cancer or severe auto immune disease), the clinic will try to give appointments much quicker.

Will I get to see Dr. Rau?

Dr. Rau has limited openings for new patients. He mostly sees patients in conjunction with another doctor. However, his schedule is booked well in advance. He has several colleagues who have worked with him for many years and provide comparable care to Dr. Rau. All doctors at the clinic have trained with and worked with Dr. Rau and are fully qualified Biological Medicine physicians. You will see your assigned doctor on your first day and many times during your stay.

How can I prepare for my trip?

We advise you to familiarize yourself, as much as possible, with the principles of Paracelsus Biological Medicine. Peruse our website www.pbmn.org and/or www.paracelsus.ch for an overview of the philosophy and more in-depth information. We highly recommend that you also read Dr. Rau’s book, “The Swiss Secret to Optimal Health” and our revised version of “A Guide to Paracelsus Biological Medicine” This guide offers a new approach to health and well-being that combines noninvasive medical technology with the body’s natural healing power. How should I pack?

Switzerland weather is similar to New England weather (always changing!); including cold, snowy winters, and hot summers. We suggest checking online for up-to-date weather conditions. Dressing in layers, with cotton and sweaters is always advisable. Short sleeved shirts make some treatments, such as infusions, easier. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

An additional bag is suggested for bringing back a 3-6 month supply of medications. For Al Ronc, you will need the same clothing and good walking shoes.

What should I bring with me?

It is not necessary to bring records or copies of notes from your current doctors. However, you may bring your most recent test results if you would like. The clinic does their own testing as they see necessary.

Be sure to pack comfortable clothes, walking shoes, slippers for the hotel, books, notebook for taking notes, and music and DVDs if you wish. You should also bring a tote bag or back pack for carrying these belongings with you back and forth to the clinic.

Free Internet access is available at the Santis Hotel and at the clinic, and all rooms have phones and hairdryers.

What about transportation while I’m there?

Shuttle service to and from the clinic is provided for the hotels in Teufen. There is also a train service, which is easy and efficient, within very short walking distance. You can rent a car if you wish (the Santis Hotel staff will help you) and there are taxis, but they are expensive. Upon your arrival, you can easily take the train directly from the airport to St. Gallen (a one hour trip), rent a car or ask to be met by a private driver. The clinic can organize this for you and give you the updated costs. Patients staying in St. Gallen will need to take a taxi or use the Appenzeller train.

What can I expect when I arrive at the clinic?

There will be a schedule of your first day appointments and an information packet waiting for you at the hotel, please review it carefully. All the staff at the clinic and the Santis Hotel are very helpful and they all speak English well. Don’t be afraid to ask your questions. One of your first appointments will be with the patient coordinator at the clinic. She will go over everything with you and is always available if you have any questions or concerns.

Is there anything to do nearby the clinic? Will I have time to do any sight-seeing?

Your schedule while being treated at the clinic will be fairly full. There is some free time, but for the most part, your days are full. You are on your own at night. However, there are many American patients staying at the Santis Hotel, so you are not alone.

If you wish to do extra travelling, you should plan time before or after your 3-week stay. The clinic is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The Santis Hotel and the clinic can advise you on some sightseeing. Zurich is an hour away by train; St. Gallen and Appenzell are interesting to visit.

What about food?

If you stay at the Santis Hotel, your breakfast will be provided, and dinner is offered. All meals follow Dr. Rau’s recommended diet, please visit the nutrition page of the Paracelsus website at http://www.paracelsus.ch/en/biological-medicine/nutrition/? The Culinarium Restaurant is next to the clinic, which offers choices also following the Clinic diet plan. There are also several very nice restaurants in Teufen and St. Gallen which are delicious and vegetarian. The clinic or the hotel staff can provide you with that information. There is a nutritionist on staff to go over your diet with you. Ask for an appointment in advance.

If you wish to purchase other health-food items, here is a map of the health food stores in the vicinity of the clinic. The Swiss food stores provide much more organic and local foods then in the United States. St. Gallen Health Foods Stores www.travelingnaturally.com. Map to store here.

How can I prepare for my return?

A representative from the pharmacy will meet with you prior to your departure to go over all of your medications, remedies etc. Be sure you understand everything and how to order refills when you return home. It is best to arrange in advance for a local doctor to follow up with upon your return. Many people return home needing infusions or neural therapy, which can be difficult to arrange with your primary care physician. Our PBMN referral list in North America is limited to practitioners who have studied with Dr. Rau. Please call our office for suggestions of practitioners in your area at (508) 748-0816 or click here to find out more.

What about the Al Ronc Clinic?

There is another Paracelsus Clinic, which belongs fully to Paracelsus and is practicing the same intensive Biological Medicine as the main clinic, it is the Paracelsus Clinica Al Ronc, please visit at www.alronc.ch.

The clinic was built as a Hotel-Clinic, wonderfully located in the mountains of Southern Switzerland on an elevation of 2,800 feet above sea level. Situated absolutely spectacularly within chestnut forests and with a marvelous view of the Swiss mountains, near Lugano and Bellinzona, in the southern, Italian part of Switzerland. It has a wonderful Mediterranean climate. The Clinic has 26 comfortable, modern double rooms, a vegetarian kitchen that provides Dr. Rau’s hypoallergenic food, according to the principles described in his book “The Swiss Secret to Optimal Health”, or also offered for cancer patients, the unique Paracelsus Dr. Rau’s Cancer Program.

The leading doctor is Dr. Petra Wiechel, MD, who has studied with Dr. Rau and works in very close cooperation with the Paracelsus doctors.

Paracelsus Al Ronc, www.alronc.ch, provides all the treatments that the main clinic provides, except dental work. All special cures are provided, too, such as the:
   • Paracelsus detox weeks
   • the liver detox program
   • the Paracelsus Dr. Rau Cancer program
   • special metabolic weeks/overweight weeks, etc.

The advantage of staying in Al Ronc is that you stay in-house, the location and clinic are absolutely beautiful and it is more calm and quiet. They also provide special, more deep going energetic and psycho-emotional services. The stay in Al Ronc may be more relaxing than in the main clinic.

Regularly, Dr. Rau personally provides intensive treatment weeks at Al Ronc, for maximum 20 patients. For more information please visit www.paracelsus.ch or www.alronc.ch.

How to apply for Al Ronc?

All applications are processed through Paracelsus Clinic Lustmühle. Dr. Rau will review your questionnaire personally and make prescription suggestions as well as which clinic you will benefit from the most; Al Ronc or Paracelsus Clinic Lustmühle. For Al Ronc, there are much shorter waiting times – therefore, for urgent cases Dr. Rau might suggest to go to Al Ronc.

Costs at Al Ronc?

More or less similar to Paracelsus Clinic Lustmühle.

How to get To Al Ronc:

By train from Zürich Airport in 2 hours, direct connections to Bellizona, where the Al Ronc shuttle will pick you up. From Lustmühle it is also a 2 hours drive, over the Swiss Alps. Individual transportation by car can be organized, too. Milano (Italy) airport is slightly closer to Al Ronc, but can be very stressful and the transportation to Al Ronc is more complicated.

Can I still have dental work while being in Al Ronc?

Yes, you can either come to Paracelsus Clinic Lustmühle first and have all the examinations for 1-2 days. From there you are brought to Al Ronc by shuttle or car. Or, if dental work is needed, you can come for 1, 2 or 3 days to the Paracelsus Clinic Lustmühle, together with other patients, and have this treatment done.
